지난 2일 오전. 우리은행 행장후보추천위원회가 열렸다. 최종 면접 후보를 압축하기 위한 회의. 시간과 장소는 공개되지 않았다. 회의 결과 역시 공개되지 않았다. 행추위 멤버인 사외이사들은 전화를 받지 않았다. 우리은행 측은 “모른다”로 일관했다. 이후 후보 3명 정도로 압축됐고, ‘서금회(서강대 금융인 모임)’ 논란의 중심에 선 이광구 부행장이 포함됐다고 어렵게 확인할 수 있었다. 다른 2명의 후보를 확인하는 것은 쉽지 않았다. 언론들의 보도가 앞다퉈 쏟아져 나왔다. ‘언론들이 보도한 3명’의 후보는 이광구 부행장, 이동건 수석부행장, 정화영 중국법인장이었다. 속보 경쟁과 함께 후보 3인은 기정사실화됐다. 그럼에도 “확인할 수 없다”는 우리은행 측의 입장은 변하지 않았다. 아니, 정말 확인할 도리가 없는 것 같았다. 우리은행 측에 후보 3인의 사진을 요청했다. “언론에 보도된 인물들을 말씀하시는 것이죠?”라는 질문이 돌아왔다. 다른 신문, 방송에도 ‘언론들이 보도한 3명’의 사진을 제공하고 있다는 부연과 함께. 우리은행 측이 보내 온 사진은 이광구, 이동건, 정화영 3인의 것이었다. 언론들의 오보 퍼레이드가 끝난 것은 그 날 늦은 오후였다. 3인의 후보는 이광구 부행장, 김승규 부행장, 김양진 전 수석부행장으로 바로잡혔다. 다시 언론들은 수정된 기사들을 쏟아내기 시작했다. 나중에 들은 얘기. 금융당국도 이 날 오전부터 행장 후보 3인이 ‘이광구, 이동건, 정화영’으로 보도되는 것을 보고 꽤나 당황했다고 한다. 5일 저녁 6시44분. 우리은행에서 이메일을 보냈다. 이광구 부행장이 차기 우리은행장 후보로 선정됐다는 소식. 행추위는 “이광구 후보가 은행업 전반에 대한 폭 넓은 경험과 역량을 바탕으로 우리은행의 기업가치를 제고함으로써 최대 현안인 민영화와 우리은행 경쟁력 제고에 큰 기여를 할 것으로 기대한다”고 밝혔다고 했다. 그러나 이 날 누가, 언제, 어디서 모여 어떤 면접과정과 어떤 논의 끝에 이런 결정에 이르렀는지는 여전히 공개하지 않았다. 내정설의 확산, 유력 후보의 중도 하차, 외압의 암시, 비밀주의로 일관한 후보 면접과 논의 절차, 그리고 내정설의 현실화. 차마 웃을 수 없는 한 편의 촌극은 이렇게 마무리됐다. 성현(聖賢)의 말씀을 따라 역지사지(易地思之)하기로 한다. ‘우리는 선출된 권력이다. 우리은행은 정부가 주인인 은행이다. 선출된 권력이 철학과 가치관을 공유하는 인물에게 중요한 조직을 맡기는 것이 당연하지 않은가? 이 정도 인사도 정권이 못 하는가. 더구나 이광구 부행장이 어디 낙하산인가? 인사, 전략, 영업 분야를 두루 거친 내부 전문가 아닌가? 은행 안팎에서 실력은 인정받는 사람 아닌가? 일부 부정적인 여론이 있고, 언론이 씹어댄다고 도로 물린다면 그 걸 국정운영이라고 할 수 있나? 과거 정권도 자기 사람을 필요한 자리, 중요한 자리에 다 앉혔다. 지난 정권에는 하물며 4대 천왕도 있었는데 왜 우리한테만…’ 박근혜 대통령은 이른바 ‘비선실세’의 국정개입 논란과 관련해서 “지라시에나 나오는 그런 이야기들에 나가 전체가 흔들린다는 것은 정말 부끄러운 일이라고 생각한다”고 말했다고 한다. 그런데 지라시에나 나올 법한 내정설이 그대로 현실이 되는 게 정말 부끄러운 일이다. 학연과 지연 등으로 엮인 무리들이 여기저기 줄을 대려 뭉쳐 다니는 게 정말 부끄러운 일이다. 자산 250조원의 대형 은행장을 밀실에서, 비밀주의로 일관하며 뽑는 게 정말 부끄러운 일이다. ‘정치 금융’의 폐해까지 들먹일 필요도 없다. 요새는 초등학교 반장도 이렇게는 뽑지 않는다.
